WAVE, in partnership with UQ, is proposing  a seminar on media
freedom@work: monitoring safety for women journalists, with a mini training
online networking event. Proposed dates are 28 April - 4th May. The aims
will be

To strengthen Pacific journalism through better understanding of human
rights links to media work in the context of Pacific governance

To foster a strong and thriving network of Pacific women in media, and
media leadership.

The insertion of a mini-training event on Networking and the Net on the
final day of the Seminar is highly relevant to Pacific women in journalism
from developing nations, as the use of the Internet is often their key link
to each other and this is often only available through their work in the
media.

The skills and information exchange provided by the proposed technical
training mini-workshop will help its Pacific participants to build on
existing Internet access in practical and effective ways; it will also help
them to make strong and effective use of the Internet in deploying
high-level digital advocacy and public education skills, including on-line
social networking techniques.

This aspect of information and communications technology (ICT) for social
change (linking information, governance, and media practice) is a
still-growing area in this region.
 Benefits:

 benefits are:

Quality news coverage: Media coverage generated by the Pacific
participants filing back to newsrooms will highlight the Seminar themes,
and will reflect key UNESCO World Press Freedom Day 2010 free speech and
freedom of expression priorities.
The Pacific region's first-ever hosting of a World Press Freedom Day 2010
global conference provides an ideal chance to question and call attention
to the low newsroom status of women journalists, and the resulting limits
on their freedom to do their jobs without fear or favour and be respected
as media professionals.

Knowledge and practice: Participants will gain a human rights-based
insight into the state of the regional and global media workplace for
women, and will gain a deeper appreciation of workplace safety and human
rights issues. Hands-on online networking will allow them to develop and
explore a range of practical methods to ensure that the Pacific WAVE Media
network, (the region's first network of women in Pacific media to operate
both online and "in person" in a more traditional sense) grows in strength
and develops long-term viability.

Strategic networking: As the 15th anniversary of Section J of the United
Nations Beijing Platform for Action on Women and Media 2010 provides a long
overdue opportunity for women in the Pacific media to assess the commitment
of their managers to a range of strategies to support women and media
freedom; in our observation, promises in this regard made by regional media
and government organisations have often been mere lip-service and have not
been implemented in practice. Strategic and effective networking has great
potential to enhance regional unity amongst the Pacific's
geographically-distant and culturally-diverse range of women's media
communities. Such networks will facilitate deeper and more diverse
professional exchanges between Pacific media women, which will enable us to
set the future directions for the Pacific WAVE Media Network and ensure the
NGO achieves to the full its future potential as an innovative and
representation regional women's rights and media freedom advocacy
organisation.

Monitoring/Action plans: Strategic planning discussions to overcome the
human rights and media freedom challenges that Pacific media women face,
and to plot a future path for the regional community of media women, will
be a key part of the Seminar.

Visioning and leadership: Skills exchange and networking for the
largest-ever gathering of Pacific women media practitioners will be an
impactful experience for all participants, at both a personal and
professional level. Through group work and discussion sessions,
participants will understand and own their potential as media practitioners
and leaders.

Supporting a regional voice for Pacific media women at the 2010 World
Press Freedom Day conference: The Seminar will help ensure that Australia
hosts a high quality, Pacific- led and owned space which showcases a
diverse balance of voices from Pacific journalists at this global UNESCO
World Press Freedom Day event, which is a first for the Pacific region, and
for Australia.
