FIJI PM SAYS GOVERNMENT NOT AGAINST METHODISTS
Bainimarama says some leaders politicize church

SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, March 25, 2010) - Fiji's Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama has assured leaders of the Methodist Church in Fiji that his government is not against the church.

In a meeting with more than 130 church elders in Suva yesterday, Bainimarama urged the elders to find a fresh approach to leadership in the church.

"Prime Minister Bainimarama said the government's concern has always been with the few leaders of the church who have been and continue to be fully engrossed with politics," said government spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Neumi Leweni

"These leaders tried to politicize the church and in the process made it appear that government is against the entire church," Leweni said in a statement after the meeting.

He said Bainimarama reassured the elders that government supports the church and would like to see it flourish and "take on its true role of developing the spiritual foundation of its members."

Leweni said as a result of the meeting, church elders and members had a better appreciation of why the annual conference and divisional and quarterly meetings have been banned.

He said church elders were advised to review the church leadership and refocus on their core role and responsibilities.

"The church needs to improve the management of its affairs from its overall vision, its day-to-day activities, and importantly its leadership style and how it is leading the flock. The church members deserve better," Leweni said.
