WIDER INSPIRATION SAID TO BE DESIRABLE FOR FIJI MEDIA DECREE

WELLINGTON (Radio NZ International/Pacific Media Watch): The introduction of Fiji's Media Decree has been put on hold because of the work that needs to be done in the wake of Cyclone Tomas.

It is proposed under the new system that media organisations will be registered and a complaints tribunal will also be set up.

The interim administration has looked to systems in country's such as Singapore and China for inspiration.

A media law expert at Canterbury University, Associate Professor Ursula Cheer, believes it would have been more helpful to look a little more widely:

"I have to say that looking to regimes like China and Singapore without perhaps looking at other examples such as the UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand is a bit of a concern in the sense that Singapore and China tend to control speech more, there is no doubt about that, so I would be concerned if the regulatory model came only from those systems."

Fiji Television and the Fiji Times have already been barred from taking part in any consultations.
