One of the great rivalries of the ASB Polyfest continues on the Samoan Stage today. For the last eight years, the co-ed school section on The University of Auckland Samoan Stage has been won by Avondale College. In second place in each of these eight years, has been Otahuhu College.
They continue their long standing rivalry today, with Avondale College on stage at 10:15am and looking to make it nine wins in a row. Otahuhu College hit the Samoan Stage at 1:10pm, where their look to end their long string of second placing, and go one better in 2010.
Another on-stage rivalry today will be between Mangere College and Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate on the Waka Pacific Cook Islands Stage. Mangere College will be looking to defend their Cook Islands crown at 2:45pm this afternoon, while Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate will be on stage at 1:35 looking to win back the title they had won from 2006 – 08.
The host school – Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate will also have a group of former students on stage at 3:20pm this afternoon to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the ASB Polyfest. Fifty of their star performers from previous ASB Polyfests head back on stage together just before this year's prize-giving.
The ACC Tongan Stage will be alive with the traditional dances of Tongan such as the Hiko, Lakalaka, Tau'olunga, Tautakaniua, with the MIT Niue Stage also runs all day.
The Hapai Te Hauora Maori Stage will host the Division One competition. The traditional student strong-holds of kapa haka such as Hato Petera College, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Hoani Waititi, Te Kapunga James Cook High School, Kahurangi Auckland Girls Grammar will be battling it out for the coveted Division One crown.
Kahurangi Auckland Girls Grammar are seeking a three-peat of wins in Division One. In 2008, there were the first all Girls school to take out the top honours on the Maori Stage.
The ASB Village will also be full of action today, with popular group For Da Grind performing at 12:30pm, and
J. Williams signing autographs at 1:00pm. Williams debut album "Young Love" was released last year, with the third single off the album "Ghetto Flower" reaching number five on the New Zealand charts.
The colourful Hirinaki Group from Tahiti is on stage during the lunch breaks today, giving the ASB Polyfest a taste of Tahiti at 1pm on the Maori, Cook Islands and Samoan stages. The Tahitian performance group have made a special visit to the festival this year, and proved a crowd-puller with their performances yesterday.
Today marks the final day of the 2010 ASB Polyfest, with 90,000 spectators anticipated to have watched the colour and culture at the festival by the time it closes at 6pm this evening. Entry is $4.
