RADIO TONGA HELPS WITH TOMAS ALERTS

SUVA (Fijilive.com/Pacific Media Watch): Communication with the Lau group in north-eastern Fiji was out of action and Radio Tonga broadcast messages from disaster management officials in Suva to the islands as Hurricane Tomas struck.
Disaster management official Pajiliai Dobui told Fijilive contact with emergency operation centres in Lau had been severed due to damage Hurricane Tomas was making in the area.
"We can't get in touch with them," Dobui confirmed.
He said they were using comsat mobile phones to communicate with the two centres in Vanuavatu and Namuka, which did not work anymore because of damaged infrastructure caused by Tomas.
He said they had since resorted to sending messages through Radio Fiji, whose AM frequency has nationwide coverage.
Dobui said Radio Fiji was also sending the messages to Radio Tonga to broadcast from Nuku'alofa for people in Ono and Vatoa who were closer to Tonga.
Meanwhile, two Fiji navy boats are scheduled to leave Suva early tomorrow morning for the Lau group and Lomaiviti taking food, tarpaulins and other relief supplies for areas worst affected by Tomas.
The preparations were announced as the Nadi weather office predicted a return to good weather for most parts of the country tomorrow.
