SUVA (Fijivillage.com/Pacific Media Watch): Just a day after Fiji Tourism Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum stated that overseas media were creating a false picture of the situation in Fiji after Hurricane Tomas, another report has been highlighted in the New Zealand media today.

It has been reported by Radio NZ that Waqa Iliesa from Ketei village in Totoya in the Lau Group said that the nearby village of Udu was not so fortunate, and 100 people were living in four houses.

Fijivillage spoke to Josese Salabiau, Navesi Primary School head teacher in Udu village, today who said the report was incorrect.

[Audio file]

Salabiau added that 10 houses in the village were completely destroyed.

He added that most of the vegetation in the village has been destroyed, and the villagers were eating whatever breadfruit was left on the trees and cassava that they had buried to last them for the next few weeks.

The Fiji Navy vessel Kikau had already visited the village and they expected their food rations to arrive soon.
