KO TAWA – Sunday April 19 at 8.30 PM

Series premiere!  A fascinating six-part series that tells the stories behind a selection of taonga collected by Captain Gilbert Mair in the 19th Century.  Tonight: Kinikini is about a rain cape in the collection that belonged to Te Kooti. The story takes us back to the days of Te Kooti and Mair, a colonial soldier, as warriors on opposing sides.

 

MRS PALFREY AT THE CLAREMONT (SUNDAY FEATURE) (2005) – Sunday April 19 at 9.00 PM

The story of Mrs Palfrey, an elegant, elderly and recently-widowed lady who has recently moved from Scotland to London, to be near to her 26 year-old grandson Desmond.  Starring Joan Plowright and Rupert Friend.

 

TA PAORA (NZ DOCUMENTARY) – Wednesday April 22 at 8.30 PM

A daughter's intimate portrait of the private life behind the public face of Sir Paul Reeves.  It spans his life, from his childhood to the prominent leader he is today.  One of the focuses is his rediscovery of his taha Maori – which came about after the church sent him home to Taranaki.  He grew up in Wellington, knew little about his whanau, but went on to become a key negotiator for his people.

Interpretations of war through weaving, tapestry, photography, sculpture, and postage stamp design.

Highlights from the cenotaph in Tongatapu.

 

PROJECT: Tracing Ancestors – 11.00 AM

Sacred Heart School students investigate the stories behind fallen Old Boys. The students travel to France and Belgium to pay their respects at the resting places of the young men who made the ultimate sacrifice.

 

FEATURE FILM: The Battle of the River Plate (1956) – 11.30 AM

One of the great war movies, this classic tells the true story of New Zealand warship, HMS Achilles. As the German battleship Graf Spee savages British merchant naval ships, Allied forces hunt down their formidable and wily foe. Featuring the actual ship, HMS Achilles, and starring John Gregson, Anthony Quayle, & Peter Finch.

 

NZ GOES TO WAR: WWII - North Africa, Greece & Crete – 1.30 PM

Judy and Wena return to hold more discussions on New Zealand's presence in international conflicts.

 

Reconstructive Surgery and the Military – 2.30 PM

An exploration of the work of pioneering surgeon, Sir Harold Gillies, and others.

 

Documentary: Sisters Reunited – 3.00 PM

UK documentary about an English woman who has grown up feeling different to the other children around her. She traces her true bloodline through a wartime romance, back to New Zealand, and discovers both a Maori heritage and siblings she never knew she had.

 

Gallipoli Dawn Service – 3.30 PM

Delayed highlights from ANZAC Cove.

 

NZ GOES TO WAR: Turks in New Zealand – 4.00 PM

Judy and Wena explore the extraordinary bond we today share with our former foe, including highlights of the service from the Ataturk Memorial in Wellington.

Update on the war medals stolen from Waiouru in 2007.

 

Kanohi ki te kanohi: ANZAC VC Winners – 4.45 PM

New Zealander, Willie Apiata, and Australian, Mark Donaldson, come face-to-face for the first time and Maori Television is there.  Both have been awarded the Victoria Cross, for similar acts of bravery.

 

NZ GOES TO WAR: Japan and South East Asia – 5.00 PM

Discussions continue about New Zealand's role in Asian conflicts.

 

Documentary:  My Father's War In Italy – 6.00 PM

A man traces his father's footsteps as a Kiwi soldier in Italy during WWII and discovers an unexpected connection to the country.

 

PREMIERE Documentary:  Tribute 08 - The Vietnam Apology – 7.00 PM

Last year the NZ Government's apologised for sending New Zealand soldiers to war in Vietnam.

 

NEWS: Te Kaea – 7.30 PM

 

The ANZAC Address - General Peter Cosgrove – 8.00 PM

Retired General Peter Cosgrove (former Chief of the Australian Defence Force, Australian of the Year 2001) delivers the annual ANZAC Day Address at Maori Television. Cosgrove provides a fascinating insight into the ANZAC spirit that unites our two countries.

 

Concert: Yolande Gibson sings 'We'll Meet Again' – 8.30 PM

Once described as "more Vera Lynn than Vera Lynn", Yolande Gibson takes a trip down memory lane to sing some of the greatest songs from the war era.

 

Concert: ANZAC 'Hei Kinaki' – 9.00 PM

A lively line-up of some New Zealand performers including, John Rowles, Tina Cross Eddie Lowe and Elizabeth Marvelly, alongside some of the most exciting emerging Maori talent from Aotearoa.
