Pacific Anzac This Saturday...Lest we Forget.
For the fourth year running, Māori Television will devote a full day's
programming to ANZAC Day, Saturday April 25, with ANZAC - KOTAHI TE
WAIRUA, screening from 5.50am through until 11.00 pm.
ANZAC day TV coverage on Maori Television this Saturday 25th March has
a Pacific focus according to Associate Producer Pamela Cain. There
will be crossovers and stories in Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands,
not forgetting those involved here in Aotearoa.
Just before press time we were told to inform YOU, The reader, 6a.m.
8.30am, 10.00am (for the Tongan Cenotaph live cross) and 2.00pm are
times something Pacific will happen.
At 10.30 there is a live cross to the cenotaph in Tonga where also
PiTV personal Nevak 'Ilolahia will be calling from Pangai Si'i in
Kingdom of Tonga the official dawn service. Honouring the 56 Tongan
volunteers who joined the NZ Army in World War I and their ANZAC
brothers and sisters.
Richard Fraser from the Australian High Commission also tells us that
every year the grave of 3 Kiwis Soldiers buried in Tongatapu are
'tidied up" on Anzac Day.
There are also stories from SAMOA as It is well-known that the
Pacific region played a big role in WWII, down through Asia and in the
Pacific Islands. There is a story looking at the history of Samoa's
involvement in battles with NZ troops, and without.
Another story is About the Samoan RSA ".
ANZAC Day is no longer recognised as a national holiday in Samoa, but
there's still a dawn service to remember those who fought in different
conflicts around the world. Samoa's RSA president, Tom Overhoff, is
the only returned serviceman left from either of the two world wars -
a Dutchman who fought with the Resistance."
According to a Maori Television publicist, HRH Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese
Efe, Academics Luisi Mataia-Milo and Asofou Si'o also have a say.
