Community has designs on buses

Over 1100 entries were received in the Waka Pacific "Design a Bus" competition.

Waka Pacific, the Counties Manukau bus service re-launched with a new look on 16 February this year, currently features three designs inspired by the community it serves.  In early March, a competition was launched to find a fourth.

Six finalists have been selected from among entries received from as far north as Kaitaia, and as far south as Palmerston North.

However, Warren Fowler, General Manager Waka Pacific, says the Waka Pacific team was so impressed by the quality and quantity of entries that it decided to have four winning designs, instead of one as planned originally.

"We could see that it was going to be impossible to choose just one design," says Mr Fowler.  "The standard of entry was amazing and the number of entries blew us away."

"We received multiple entries from schools and some from entire families, with some designs done entirely by hand and others on computer. Some of the more original designs featured the use of woven material, paint and even glitter," continues Mr Fowler.

"Now's the time for the Counties Manukau community to get behind choosing the four designs that will hit the streets in June," says Mr Fowler.

The six finalists' designs will be on display until 27 April at the Manukau City Chambers, on mobile billboards around Manukau, on the Waka Pacific website (www.wakapacific.co.nz) and the Mai FM website (www.maifm.co.nz).

The public can choose their favourite design on the Mai FM website until 27 April.

Waka Pacific will announce the four winning designs at end of April. Each of the winners will receive $1000 and one year's free bus travel on Waka Pacific buses.

Buses painted in the four new designs will hit the streets in June.
