12 COUNTRIES INDICATE INTENTION TO ATTEND YOUTH FESTIVAL IN SUVA

News in brief:

(THURSDAY APRIL 16TH 2009, No:0816/MOY) 12 COUNTRIES INDICATE INTENTION TO ATTEND YOUTH FESTIVAL IN SUVA

Twelve countries have indicated their intention to attend the Pacific Youth Festival in Suva in July.

Kiribati, Tonga, Nauru, Federated States of Micronesia, American Samoa, Niue, Cook Islands, Marshall Islands Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Tuvalu and Wallis and Futuna have so far confirmed their intention to attend to the Department of Youth and Sports.

Minister for Education, Culture and Heritage, Youth and Sports, Filipe Bole said government focal points in the 12 countries have sent in intention to attend forms.

"The form is really a way of gauging possible participation so that essential logistics such as travel and accommodation arrangements can be planned and organized as early as possible," Mr Bole said.

"Whilst 12 countries have officially confirmed their interest in participating, we have received several communications from other countries requiring further information," he said.

"Papua New Guinea for instance has asked if they can come in early to tour some of our youth drop in centres," he said.

"Overall, we are optimistic about full participation from the 22 countries that have been invited. The due date for the receipt of registration by countries is set for 24th of April 2009" he said.

"However as host country, Fiji has received electronic communication from interested organizations and individuals indicating their intention to participate in the festival outside of their governments' involvement," Mr Bole said.

"These organizations include youth peak bodies from within the member countries of the Pacific community."

He said following these, representatives of the Pacific Youth Council lobbied and gained the National Organizing Committee's endorsement  at its meeting on 9th April to allow the participation of country youth peak bodies and interested organizations in the event.

"To this effect the Department as PYF secretariat has formally requested to the Pacific Youth Council as the umbrella body for all regional youth peak bodies, to facilitate the dissemination of invitations to interested organizations in the member countries."

Mr Bole said the festival will not only aim to set the platform for the regional actioning of the youth agenda but promises to be an educational and empowering event for all youth participants.
