Independent Music New Zealand Weighs In Behind International Celebration of Record Stores

Let's go shopping…

This Saturday April 18, independently-owned record stores around the world join forces to celebrate 'Record Store Day' – including several iconic stores right across New Zealand, from Auckland to Wellington to Christchurch to Waihi; and New Zealand's independent record label association Independent Music New Zealand is right there in the crowd cheering.

Metallica officially kicked off Record Store Day at Rasputin Music in San Francisco on April 19, 2008 and Record Store Day is now celebrated internationally on the third Saturday of every April. This is a day when independently owned record stores come together with artists and labels to celebrate the art of music. Activities include special vinyl and CD releases, discounts, prizes and instore performances by artists of all descriptions in stores across the globe.

On the local scene

In New Zealand, Saturday April 18 brings Wellington's Slow Boat Records' second brush with the fine new tradition that is International Record Store Day. At 2pm they're presenting an instore performance from local faves Cassette, promoting their brand spanking new album 'The Jingle King'; plus they'll be offering album giveaways, specials on tee shirts and CDs; and maybe the odd special guest...Slow Boat will also have stock of the very limited, vinyl-only exclusive Record Store Day compilation 'This LP Kills Hard Drives', on heavyweight vinyl in a deluxe gatefold sleeve stuffed with label sampler CDs and catalogues.

Real Groovy Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch will all be celebrating the unique place that they occupy both in their local communities and nationally. Real Groovy Auckland will be has booked a stellar line up of acts, including Anna Coddington, Tourettes, the Benka Boradovsky Bordello Band, the Tutts, Dictaphone Blues and Harbour City Electric all playing live between 1.30pm and 6pm. There will also be plenty of cheeky distractions for browsers, with giveaways including jeans, shoes, vouchers, CDs and DVDs – plus every customer who makes a purchase will go into the draw to win a Vintage White XS Stratocaster copy from Stratocaster Guitars.

To spice up your shopping, Wellington's Real Groovy has DJs playing instore all day from midday, plus 10% discounts on pretty much everything, a huge vinyl sale, and vouchers hidden inside Real Groovy bags – so if you buy something, make sure you check yours before you leave the store. And in Christchurch it's a veritable mini-music festival, with the L.E.D.S, The Eastern, Le Mot Café and the Transistors all playing between 1pm – 4pm on Saturday afternoon. All of the Real Groovies have few club memberships too.

Marbecks, who have served Auckland music lovers since 1934, are joining in too. They're marking Record Store Day by offering 15% off all New Zealand music, and keep an eye out for their instore giveaways. To top it off, every purchase goes into the draw to win 10 CDs of your choice.

Other New Zealand stores participating this year include Music Oasis in Waihi, who cater for the full spectrum of musical needs – in addition to stocking new and secondhand CDs and DVDs they offer instrument sales plus hire and repair, they retail accessories, sheet music and stereo equipment and even run music lessons for students of all ages. Beat Merchants in Auckland's Victoria Street has supplied the latest in dubstep, hip hop, reggae, drum and bass and funk vinyl and CD for ten years, and they actively support New Zealand's Urban Art movement, teaming up with artists, designers and collectives. And when you stop by Conch Records in Ponsonby Road you can chill out in their café after you've browsed their extensive collection of soul, funk, jazz, latin, reggae, indie hip hop, electronica, dubstep and down tempo beats. They also offer a selection of T-shirts, DVDs, books and art.

International action

16 countries are participating in Record Store Day 2009, including Australia, Belgium, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Israel, Japan, the UK and the US. Internationally, the UK is celebrating by launching the Coalition of UK Indie Stores; instore performers include Graham Coxon (Blur) and Andrew Weatherall; and there will be exclusive releases from the likes of Oasis, Cold War Kids, Franz Ferdinand, The Breeders, The Jesus Lizard, plus Sonic Youth and Beck, who have recorded 7" covers of each other. In the US, Record Store ay stores are offering exclusive (mostly vinyl) releases from the likes of Bad Religion, Leonard Cohen, the Dandy Warhols, Jane's Addiction and the Smiths, and Green Day's breakthrough album 'Dookie' is being reissued to coincide with the day. And in Australia, artists such as Ronan Keating, the Gin Club and Cheech and Chong will be performing in stores, and Australia's Music Network magazine have given the day a cover feature.
