Re: [pima.nius] Re: Calling on PI TV Makers

Will you have definitely developed Kiwi TV from what it was two years ago. Excellente!!

But I agree with Olly. A television broadcaster is the impetus for production, jobs and growth.

It can be a two pronged approach, as we see with the major broadcasters currently on air. The television broadcast development strategy (moving into the digital era) has been accompanied by a development of internet and other services (such as telephone). But in these cases the first and primary focus is the television broadcast. The other services are add-ons.

All power to you Will but in my analyses if we do not start to develop broadcast services and secure at least one of the digital platforms development will always be retarded and limited.

To me it's a no brainer. Soon, television broadcast from the main players will only be available through services such as FreeView, Tivo, Sky and others - all digital. The analogue channels will be moved over to telcos and in the mix, where will we find Pacific Islands representation - lost in translation.

We've already missed major talks and decisions. Maori have kept up with the play and challenged for a piece of the pie. We follow in their wake.

Many of our people are behind the eight-ball with the pick-up of web technologies (especially with the cost of such technologies) but they have picked up on Sky and other broadcast products.

As incomes rise and the youth population both grows and ages, more and more they will need and seek access to broadcast resources (in a fair and equitable society) and the potential to create their own positive and cultured view of the world through broadcast.

We have been blessed to have programmes like Tagata Pasifika, Polyfest, Pacific Beat St, Bro-Town and others (the odd doco, comedy show or other minority interest show). We have also been blessed with the access given to community groups through Triangle Television.

But, this is only a fraction of the potential both in terms of production and audience reach.

Pacific Television or what ever it may be called, will not only be interesting to minority groups; it would be interesting to a wide variety of people.

We are in the Pacific. It is a quarter of the world's surface. There is a world wide audience that is craving for Polynesian or Pasifika/Pasefika influenced programming. In the most part 'till today, what we have seen has been limited, underfunded and often influenced by forces leading to their demise or failure.

Maori have already been through these trials and tribulations. They are still going through it.

We are a part of the next stage of development. Pacific TV is a part of the next stage of development.

Aotearoa, as a world leader can create something which is sellable over-seas.

There are potential audiences right around the globe - in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

Documentaries, Dramas, Comedies, News and Current Affairs, And LANGUAGE AND CULTURAL PRESERVATION and development; linking the entire Pacific and reaching out to the world.

We are looking twenty years down the track. We need to start today!!

A faulty link there Will. You'll need to include the .au at the end.

Not quite what we're talking about as pay per view webcasting is not
the same as free to air Television though I appreciate what KiwiTV is
doing it doesn't seem to be propogating Pacific Island culture, the
motivation seems financial. Please don't view this as a put down but
there are clear distinctions between Television and the World Wide
Web. As we all know the media viewing forum has changed slightly in
the last few years but content is still not made predominantly for the
web but for Television which is a more accessible and direct medium.
It is the central entertainment center in most homes and is the focus
of our industry as producers, writers, directors, and technicians.
This will shift in time but we are some way off committing full time
to a web based solution. But, a fantastic job Kiwitv.
