By Campbell Cooney, Pacific Beat

SUVA (Radio Australia News/Pacific Media Watch): Fiji has given its draft response to the United Nations on 103 recommendations on how it can improve its human rights record.

The nation is taking part in the UN's periodic review of human rights, where it has been criticised for suppressing freedom of speech and electoral freedom.

During its review by the United Nations Human Rights Council last week, Fiji's military backed regime was presented with 103 recomendations on how to improve its human rights record.

When presenting the draft response in Geneva overnight, the head of Fiji's delegation, Peceli Vocea, said the UN had agreed to let Fiji's military leaders review what was being called for before a final response was given.

Vocea says Fiji's final response will be returned before June 2010 to the council for its recommendations.

Fiji has been strongly criticised for not allowing freedom of speech, gagging the media and refusing to allow elections before 2014.
