Pauly Fuemana's death a tragedy, says Minister | |
Pacific Island Affairs Minister Georgina te Heuheu says the untimely and sudden death of Pauly Fuemana is a tragedy for the New Zealand and Pasifika music and arts community.
Best known for his band Otara Millionaires Club (OMC) and its hit single How Bizarre in 1995 - which went to the top of the music charts in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and countries in Europe – Mr Fuemana was taken to the North Shore Hospital last Thursday and passed away on Sunday.
Mrs te Heuheu says his contribution to music was immense both in New Zealand and throughout the Pacific rim and Europe.
"It is always sad when you see someone who has given so much to New Zealand and Pacific music pass away at a time when he really should be in the prime of his life," Mrs te Heuheu said.
"Pauly broke new ground for New Zealand and Pasifika musicians in the mid-1990s; he put Otara and South Auckland on the world map for all the right reasons.
"His success with How Bizarre also helped pave the way and open doors abroad for other musicians who have followed in his footsteps ever since.
"It is always a shock to lose someone of his talents and abilities at such an early age and my thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends."
Mrs te Heuheu offered her condolences to Mr Fuemana's wife and five children.
"My heartfelt sympathies are with them at this time," she said.
