SUVA (The Fiji Times/Pacific Media Watch): Journalists from different media companies have joined forces to familiarise themselves with the new Crime Decree at the Fiji Times conference room in an effort to get themselves better informed so they can pass the "correct information" to the public.
The workshop, facilitated by former High Court judge Nazhat Shameem, was attended by journalists and editors from both the print and broadcast media.
Fiji Times managing director Anne Fussell said: "The media workshop has been invaluable in helping our journalists have a better understanding of the intricacies of the judicial system.
"A properly functioning judicial system lies at the heart of any society and the media is the public's eyes and ears in court so it is important we do as effective and efficient a job as possible."
She added: "Ee are particularly grateful to have had such senior figures in the legal world as Justice Paul Madigan, former judge Nazhat Shameem and Ana Tuiketei, prosecutor with the DPP, sharing their expertise and experiences with us. We are indebted to them for giving up their time to be with us."
Fiji Broadcasting Corporation's news editor Stanley Simpson said it was important for journalists to understand the decree.
"It is critical that the media reports court proceedings and judicial processes responsibly and effectively, and the workshop provided a valuable policy for practicing journalists to examine how they do their work," he said.
"The media plays an important role in the administration of justice by letting people know what goes on in a trial, so it's important that we explore how this has been delivered."
Fiji Sun journalist Sera Janine said: "We as journalists are responsible for informing the public at large and it is necessary that we ourselves are informed."
