Talofa,
I am writing to call upon PIMA members and others to form a group, a sub committee as a lobby group for Polynesian TV/Pasifika TV right here in Aotearoa.
Two years ago, before the last election and even after the election there were promises by both the Labour Party and the National Party to back a Pacific Islands television channel. There were promises by the major networks to develop such a venture and to use the digital platform, of which Television New Zealand, Maori TV and Media Works (TV 3) have been allocated fair distribution (18 in all).
But how the story changed post election. How it was quickly sidelined and the hopes of 300,000 New Zealanders wishing for something representative, something unique, something they could call their own were put on the shelf.
Pasifika, with the fastest growing youth audience in the country, the most influential youth group in the country and were soon forgotten.
Aotearoa, as a Pacific leader, a world leader of indigenous television, of regional television programming - fell short.
I now call upon members of this forum, this association, the PIMA Advisory Group and others in the industry to front up and join together in the creation of a lobby group specifically targeting the development of a Pacific Television Channel right here in Aotearoa.
If we do not keep this issue to the forefront we will never see it happen.
Media Works had an advisory panel looking at this - nothing has happened. TVNZ made promises - nothing has happened. Maori TV looked at it - nothing has happened. Our Members of Parliament formed a group to look at it - nothing has happened.
It is up to a collective body right here to keep pushing.
If we do not, we are letting our youth, our community and even the wider community of New Zealand (and globally) down, down, down.
It may not happen straight away. There are things that need to happen. There is research and number crunching to be done.
But if it does not happen, what a shame it would be.
In this regard, I would like all those interested in forming a sub-committee, a lobby group, to come together and make things happen.
Let us not give up the dream just because of a few hick-ups and excuses on the way.
Respond to this email or contact me separately.
Let's make it happen!!! We have the skills, the intent and the people to do it!!
