Points well made. Though I don't believe that
"Mr Cole" has a grip on a reality that I as a parent of teenagers
percieve on a daily basis. Sure, we record and play at our leisure but
all this does is alter how we view. What we are talking about is
'Convergence', convergence of technology, convergence of media,
convergence of television, internet, telephone into shared devices. At
the core of this 'convergence' is the good old TV. Radio was once the
central hub of family entertainment, portability and cheaper radio
sets diffused the social activity into a slightly more individual
diaspora. But, how we choose to view and when is still at our
discretion. To this day and until our social behaviour as family units
changes dramatically we will continue to cosy ourselves around the
electronic campfire and munch our toffee pops. Having said all this,
yes, changes are afoot and have been for several years. There is no
doubt in my mind that the old model for television will change.
Webcasters are delving into 'made for the net content' pouring serious
money into web episodes of dramas but we are still some way off
providing a solution to all of the contingencies that accompany rights
and distribution. All is geared currently towards the flickering box
in the center of our living rooms. But yes, good luck to KiwiTV. And
bring on PITV
