Milamala' or Happy Harvest Time Celebration: New PNG work

Already this work by Martin Morububuna has drawn significant interest. The Trobriand dancers celebrate the Milamala after the harvest of the yam crop. The painting depicts festivities and rituals associated with the celebrations of life and abundance. 'Milamila' is from the same series of work that Martin is exhibiting in London and Vancouver in the significant exhibition Ailans to Highlands. Martin Morububuna is the current artist in Residence at the De Young Museum in San Francisco.

Go to our website to view a new work selected on a recent visit to PNG by curator Giles Peterson by Chris Kauage 'Mama Na Pikinini "(Mother with Children). And we welcome Henry Iyaro whose work " Hiri Trade " with its large sails evokes the importance of Pacific navigation. Hiri is the name for the traditional trade voyages that formed an important part of the culture of the Motu people of Papua New Guinea.

Martin Morububuna, Henry Iyaro and Chris Kauage are important figures in the Contemporary Papua New Guinea art scene. As graduates of the Art School, University of PNG, they are also educators and have exhibited widely internationally. Their work is in private and museum collections.

Daniel Waswas whose work Look Within II is held by Okaioceanik art is another PNG artist who is having a lot of international success. He is currently showing with another okai artist Greg Semu plus Michel Tuffery and others in the exhibition The Great Journey: In Pursuit of the Ancestral Realm at the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Taiwan.

Samoa

Like everyone in NZ, but for Samoa and Samoans and their many friends throughout the world we share the grief and sadness from the tsunami. Our condolences and alofa to all the families who have had to bury their loved ones and our wishes for continuing strength and courage to all those who are working to bring immediate relief to the villagers. Papali'i Fatu Feu'u returned immediately from NZ to his village of Poutasi to support family and villagers and has made his studio a refuge for them.

We wish to acknowledge the passing of Tui Annandale and her mother of the Sinalei Resort who was taken by the tsunami as she tried to rescue some of the children. Tui and her family from Sinalei have been most generous and important supporters of Fatu Feu'u over many years.

Okai encourages you to support the relief effort through the Pacific Cooperation Foundation by giving at any Westpac Branch. The PCF has sponsored several shows with okai in the last 2 years. We will work with Fatu to establish a development project in Samoa in 2010.

STOP PRESS. Tuesday 20 October: Over 30 renowned artists are donating work to be auctioned at the Artists for Tsunami Relief at Webb's Auction House 18 Manukau Rd. Co-ordinated by Tautai. A collaboration of Painter Penny Howard, Ngapuhi and Poet Doug Poole, Samoan exploring cultural identity through the eyes of children lost to the Marae and Village. Penny's images painted on metaphoric silhouettes come from the 'VA' (the spaces between us all) recreating emotive forces of memory and reality: metaphor and motion while Doug's poetry uses innovative language and a mix of poetic and prosaic form to tell us his special stories.

Opens 12 October 5.30 pm @Arts Promotion Trust old Library Bldg Rust Ave Whangarei and runs until 27 October. In Auckland from 10 to 26 November @ Artstation Ponsonby Rd.

ARTSPEAK: SPIRIT OF THE PEOPLE New Melanesian Art @ Corban Art Estate Centre

Powerful performance poetry of 3 Samoan poets Doug Poole, Serie Barford and Selina Marsh (all true Westies too) in response to the works from artists of Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu drew a diverse range of Aucklanders. Ranging from Remke Ensing former academic at Auckland University and her friend from U3A, to first time poetry reading attendees in their 20's as well as Pacific people from various walks of life, this was a moving evening.

From Urban Connection for Ellie and Lady Day 17 July 2009 "..."and I wonder why our Solomons sista chose lace doilies Those palagi circles that buffer polished wood from china To navigate her migratory trails" ....."

All the poems will be available on the okai website in November. Copies of the CD catalogue and the Poems available @ $5 plus postage.
