MEDIA RELEASE                                                                15 OCTOBER 2009

The Wellington Tsunami Working Committee established under the guidance of the Samoan Advisory Council Wellington Region has had a busy past two weeks in organising relief aid for Tsunami affected families in Samoa. Relief coordinator Fa'amatuainu Tino Pereira says the Samoan community is deeply touched by the generosity of the people of Wellington who have mobilised to provide aid.

"There has been a great support from not only the Samoan communities but all communities in the region" Mr Pereira said.

"We are extremely grateful to the people of Wellington for coming together in a show of solidarity in the time of need for our people in Samoa."

He said the committee has secured eight containers so far which will be targeted towards providing essential items to the 13 worst affected villages.

"We humbly ask the people of Wellington to keep donating much needed goods such as non-perishable foods, building materials and equipment, home and kitchen utensils, crockery and linen," Mr Pereira said.

We are also appreciative of the support given to us by the following donors: NZ Rail, Ministry of Pacific Island Affairs, Reef Shipping, Families Commission, Baptist Church Fraternity, National MP Hekia Parata, Te Runanga O Toa Rangatira Inc., Te Wananga O Aotearoa, Ministry of Social Development, Brother International and Samoan Capital Radio.

The Maori community has also started to make financial contributions, with a presentation led by prominent Maori leader, Sir Wira Gardiner to be made to the Samoan High Commission on Friday 15 October.

Mr Pereira encourages the people of Wellington to ring the committee's free calling number and for the Samoan community to continue listening to the Samoan Capital Radio for any updates and further advice.
