Sealord must show stronger commitment to workers' rights
Sealord is continuing to trample on worker's rights and Labour's Maori caucus says it had expected better of the half iwi-owned company, which employs many Maori workers, says the party's Maori Affairs spokesperson Parekura Horomia.
"Sealord recently made 160 workers redundant and is now demanding that the remaining workforce accept significant reductions to their pay and conditions, despite the good profits that the company continues to enjoy.
"All this during a recession and in the face of mounting Maori unemployment, which recently jumped from 9.8 per cent to 11.9 per cent," said Parekura Horomia.
"Enough is enough and it's time the company was held to account. Iwi own half the shares in this company, which is arrogantly continuing to affect the ability of our whanau to put food on the table.
"Iwi leaders must stand up and take the matter in hand because they manage the shares in Sealord on behalf of their tribal members, a number of whom are employed by the company and are being badly treated. Labour's Maori caucus doesn't believe that's the type of behaviour our people support."
