[pima.nius] PFF: Media Freedom Day this Sunday

10:33 PM |

Lisa Lahari-Williams:

Hi all, as the hours tick away to the decision from our Pacific Forum
leaders on whether or not to suspend a member of the Pacific family
for planning to run with 5 years of military rule, just a late night
line....

This Sunday May 3, journalists and organisations/human rights
advocates everywhere will celebrate Media Freedom Day. It is the day
when the basic human right to have an opinion, (or to think for
oneself) and to openly share that opinion or those thoughts without
fear or restrictions, is remembered.

I am reminded at this time of the Sri Lankan journalist Lasantha
Wickrematunge, journalist and assassinated Editor of the Sunday Leader
newspaper: gunned down by assailants on his way to work on January 9th
this year. The Pacific Freedom Forum added the voice of Pacific
journalists to the global outcry.

Wickrematunge has been named the 2009 UNESCO World Press Freedom Prize
laureate and his final call of conscience editorial, in which he
predicted his own killing, is featured on many web sites. Just google
his name to find it.

Answering the call of conscience is something many of us can do this
weekend, just by visiting this site:
http://Pacificfreedomforum.blogspot.com and reading the alert links
there. Even if you do not sign, read the comments of those who have.
They are inspiring and informative and bring messages of hope to
Pacific media colleagues feeling under siege at this time.

As Lasantha put it:

...if we do not speak out now, there will be no one left to speak for
those who cannot, whether they be ethnic minorities, the disadvantaged
or the persecuted.

Anonymously or publicly, you can answer the call of conscience, and
let our Pacific leaders  know where you stand.

You can also do your bit for WPFD by sharing this message with anyone
you think ought to read it.

Thanks,
Lisa Williams-Lahari
Founding member, Pacific Freedom Forum.
