MAORI TELEVISION SECURES INTERNATIONAL STAFF SECONDMENT

New Zealand's national indigenous broadcaster, Maori Television, has joined forces with Australia's multicultural and multilingual public broadcaster, Special Broadcasting Service (SBS), to launch its first international staff secondment.

Marketing executive Hone Paul (Ngati Manawa, Tuhoe, Te Arawa) is undertaking a three-month secondment in the SBS marketing department in Sydney.

SBS was established to give voice and exposure to multicultural Australia to define, foster and celebrate Australia's cultural diversity. Its radio and television services broadcast in more languages than any other network in the world including 68 languages on SBS Radio; 60 languages on SBS Television; and more than 50 languages online through SBS New Media.

"An important objective that we have at Maori Television is to ensure that we develop our people by giving them opportunities to advance their skills and to perform to the best of their ability," says Maori Television General Manager Sales, Marketing and Communications, Sonya Haggie.

"This initiative with SBS enables our staff to experience the industry at an international level and to get a global perspective on broadcasting practices and new developments. SBS is an ideal partner for Maori Television because of its like-minded cultural imperatives and its strong track record of success."

SBS Director of Marketing Jacquie Riddell says the arrangement was "a great example of the unique opportunity SBS enjoys as a multicultural broadcaster, forging professional development training relationships with aligned indigenous broadcasters internationally".

Hone Paul, who joined Maori Television as a communications assistant not long after it launched in 2004, rates his work as project manager of the World Indigenous Television Broadcasting Conference in 2008 as a career highlight. The 27-year-old is part of Maori Television's Leadership Development Programme and the organisation's first team member to go on an overseas secondment.

An advanced speaker of Maori, Hone brings a new cultural perspective to the SBS marketing team as well as niche multicultural broadcast experience from another indigenous market. The secondment exposes him to bigger budget, fully integrated marketing campaigns that he would otherwise not experience with Maori Television.

"Australia has five times more television viewers than New Zealand, and working at SBS gives me insights into how marketing and communication campaigns work in a much larger television market," Hone explains. "The skills I pick up along the way will not only be beneficial to me professionally as a marketer, but also for Maori Television as a multi-platform broadcaster."

Hone Paul's secondment ends at the end of May 2009.
