ONE WEEK LEFT FOR PIKIHUIA AWARDS

Battling an ingrown toenail or a journey to another dimension, it doesn't matter what story you submit to the Pikihuia Awards judge David Geary, he is simply looking forward to reading the diverse, creative entries in this year's Pikihuia Awards.

However with only one week to go, entries need to be in soon.

The biennial Pikihuia Awards for Māori Writers for short stories (in English or Māori), novel extracts, or film scripts will close on 15 May.

Chair of the Māori Literature Trust, Robyn Bargh says it would be a shame for writers to miss out this year since writers will have to wait two more years for another chance to enter.

'The entries for Pikihuia have tripled since we started the awards and we're anticipating an increase in submissions this year, we want as many entries as possible,' says Bargh.

David Geary (Ngā Māhanga, Taranaki) is part of the team of judges, some of whom started their careers with these writing awards; the team includes Julian Wilcox (Ngā Puhi), Briar Grace-Smith (Ngā Puhi, Ngāti Wai) and Rhonda Kite (Te Aupouri).

Winning entries of the Best Short Story in English, Best Short Story in Māori and Best Novel Extract will be awarded with $2000 and may be published in the new book Huia Short Stories 8, due for release in September this year.

Secondary school students are also encouraged to get writing with their own Best Short Story in English or Māori category, with cash prizes and book prizes for their school up for grabs.

Entry is free for the Pikihuia Awards and there are no limits on the subject, however all entries must be fictional.  Closing date for all entries is Friday 15 May.
