CBA Awards 2010 - Deadline Extended
The CBA has extended the deadline for entries to its 2010 Awards.
Television or Radio programmes produced, or broadcast, for the first
time between 1st August 2008 and 1st September 2009 are eligible for
entry.
The award categories are:
* Amnesty International Award for Human Rights Programme
* World Bank Award for Programme on Development Issues
* UNESCO Award for Science Reporting & Programming
* IBC Award for Innovative Engineering
* Thomson Foundation Award for Coverage of Environment by an African
* One World Media Award for Extending Audience Reach
* CBA Roll of Honour*

*New Award - CBA Roll of Honour
The CBA President and Secretary-General will be selecting the
recipients of the CBA's Roll of Honour. Candidates should have served
their organisations, the CBA, and the principles of Public Service

CBA Travel Bursaries 2010 - Deadline extended
The CBA is offering 6 Travel Bursaries of up to £1500 to employees of
member organisations (Full Members and Affiliates) for travel to
another Commonwealth country - apart from the UK - for approximately
1-2 weeks.
The bursary is provided for a project that would benefit the bursar's
organisation and society and meet the objectives of the CBA and the
other funding organisations. Bursars cannot travel to the UK for the
bursary. On completion of the project the bursar is required to submit
a report, pictures and accounts. The CBA is grateful to the
Commonwealth Foundation and the Elizabeth R Fund for funding these
bursaries.

CBA Training Needs
The CBA would be interested to know the training needs of your
organisation. Please send in your training requirements for 2010 and

Send the Commonwealth's Secretary-General Your Questions
In the run-up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in
Trinidad and Tobago, Kamalesh Sharma will be taking questions and
suggestions from around the Commonwealth. Between the 27 and 29
November Mr. Sharma, presidents and Prime Ministers of the
Commonwealth's 53 member countries will be discussing current matters
and work.
What issues do you want discussed by Commonwealth leaders? In which
direction would you steer the Commonwealth if you were Kamalesh
Sharma? Please send your question or suggestion to
asksharma@commonwealth.int by Wednesday, 18 November. Please provide
your name, email, and your approximate location, and offer as much
information as you wish on your own background and experiences.
Meanwhile the CBA's Robin White will be in Trinidad to cover both the
People's Forum and CHOGM and will post reports for Pick of the
Commonwealth onto the CBA website.
Short Story Asia winner to Sail for 'Access' from Mumbai to Goa
In a first for India, Salil Chaturvedi, who is paralysed below the
waist, will sail from Mumbai to Goa, a distance of approximately 240
nautical miles, campaigning for equal access and promoting the power
of collaborations. Salil is a proficient writer, having won several
awards for his short stories and poetry, the latest being the
Commonwealth Short Story award for Asia in 2008.

CBA Johannesburg Conference in April 2010
Plans are now taking shape for the CBA's All-Commonwealth Conference
in Johannesburg, 17-21 April 2010. The theme - looking ahead to the
World Cup in South Africa later that year - is "Broadcasting Scores!".
The plan is to cover not only some aspects of sports coverage but also
the use of sport in development, as well as topics of wide interest.
It is also hoped to run Workshops before the Conference, on
Management, the Media and the Democratic Process, Climate Change,
Media & Health and Regulatory Issues. The main conference will begin
with a reception on the evening of 18th April. An outline agenda is

Apply Now for 2010-11 CBA MA Bursaries
The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association is offering two bursaries to
full-time staff of CBA's member organisations (Full Members and
Affiliates) from developing countries in the Commonwealth for
post-graduate courses at City University and the University of
Westminster in London, UK.
The MA Bursaries are in International Journalism at the City
University and in broadcast related subjects at the Westminster
University. The scholarship is tenable for one year.
The bursaries are part sponsored by the Chevening Programme of the
UK's Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Westminster and City
Universities, International Students House, Goodenough College and the
Commonwealth Broadcasting Association.
Please note that airfares of selected bursars will have to be paid by
the bursars' organizations, or by the bursars, and a guarantee to this
effect must be given.

Apply for MA bursary at Universiti of Brunei
The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA) invites applications
from full-time staff of CBA member organizations (Full Members and
Affiliates) from the developing countries of the Commonwealth for a
one-year Masters in Public Policy at the University of Brunei.
This is a full-time course and the bursary includes full tuition fees
for the selected applicant and free accommodation at the university
hostel (single room only). This is being sponsored by Universiti
Brunei Darussalam. Please note that airfare to and from Brunei and
subsistence costs have to be met by the candidate or the candidate's
organisation.

CBA Self Directed Training - Introduction to Change Management
The CBA has launched its first self-directed online learning modules
for trainees in member stations. The course introduces broadcasters to
the concepts of change management and performance management. The aim
is to meet the need for more effective staff development and good
governance of Commonwealth institutions.
This 4 module course introduces broadcasters to some basic concepts of
change management and performance management, relating them to real
situations in the work place. Areas covered include the basics of:
common attitudes to change; communication techniques; performance
management and appraisal systems.

CBA Media Forum for TV & Radio
In July the CBA launched a new online discussion forum for staff at
member stations around the world.
The forum is used by members to discuss current issues and post
questions to each other. Guest experts in different areas of media
production are also available to answer questions through this forum.
The Forum gives greater access to advice and network opportunities for
CBA member organisation and their staff.
Access to the forum is free for CBA member stations but is only
available through a secure username and password.
