Calling all budding song lyric and short story writers - now is your chance to shine.

The AUT New Zealand Creative Writing Competition opened on the 25th October. There are two competition genres: song lyric and short story and great prizes to be had.

Deadline for entries is: 4pm, 31 January 2010 - SO GET CREATING.

Prizes

Song lyric

The winner will receive a new Sony Vaio laptop, recommended retail $1699. The winning lyrics will be sung by a band live on bFM Breakfast.  The same band will perform the song at a Fancy New Band night which the winner will attend. 

Short Story

The winners of the two categories and a selection of entries will be published in a special magazine insert in Idealog magazine's May/June issue. Each category winner will receive a new Sony Vaio laptop, recommended retail $1699 and five hours mentoring with a leading New Zealand author.

BA-CreativeEntry Criteria

There are two categories in the Short Story genre:

1.  Emerging (aged 15 – 24 years, unpublished)
2.  Open (aged 25 years and over, unpublished)

Song Lyric: Open (aged 15 years and over)

Both categories:

  • New Zealand residents only may apply
  • AUT/Idealog/bFM staff are NOT eligible to apply
  • AUTcreativewriting-web-MAEntrants must be unpublished. For the short story category an unpublished writer is one who has not had a fiction work appear in trade book format. This means that the writer has not had fiction work appear in a widely circulated book format available for sale to the general public. For the song lyric category an unpublished writer is someone who has not had their lyrics used in a song available for sale to the general public (either CD or online).

The Judges

Song Lyric: DJs Mikey Havoc and Charlotte Ryan from bFM will be judging the song lyric competition. They will announce their favourite lyrics each week and will speak to the winner of the competition live on air.

Short Story: Tessa Duder will judge of the short story competition. Tessa has been a judge for many book and short story competitions including the Sunday Star Times Award and the Katherine Mansfield Award. Her collection of short stories, published in 2008, Is She Still Alive? – scintillating tales for women of a certain age featured on the Booksellers New Zealand's Best Seller list for 11 weeks.

How to Enter

Short Story:

  • Postal entries only will be accepted for the Short Story competition. Post the completed COVER SHEET (download below), along with your typed, stapled manuscript to the following address:

    Note: your manuscript will not be returned to you. Ensure you keep a copy for your records.  You will receive acknowledgement of your entry by email. Ensure you write your email address clearly in the space provided on the COVER SHEET below.
  • Style Guide: Type in 12 point font, use double or 1.5 line spacing with wide margins, use one side of the page only
  • Short story word count to be no more than 3000 words
  • Do not write your name on your short story. Each entrant will be assigned a number which will be added to the cover sheet and your manuscript (this ensures anonymity during the judging process
  • Entry instructions are on the SHORT STORY COVER SHEET. Download the Cover Sheet, print it and then complete the form.
  • Ensure you read the Terms and Conditions before entering the competition

Song Lyrics:

  • Email your song lyrics in a Word Document to aut@enter.net.nz
  • Ensure you have the following information in the body of your email:
  1. Song title
  2. Your full name
  3. Your full postal address
  4. Your email address
  5. Your telephone number
  6. Your date of birth (dd/mm/yyyy)
  • Your Song Lyrics must be in a Word Document with the Title of the song at the top of the page
  • Ensure you read the Terms and Conditions before you enter the competition
