Pacific Media Planning Seminar to address effective communication in agriculture, rural development and the environment

4 May 2010, Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) - Engaging the media and communicating effectively to encourage development will be the focus of a Regional Media Seminar that will be held in Fiji next week.

The Regional Media Seminar will for the first time bring together decision-makers in the media industry, policy-makers, scientists and communication experts from around the region to discuss how to overcome communication barriers and raise awareness of the value of media, especially in agriculture, rural development and in dealing with environment issues.

The seminar is organised by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), in partnership with the ACP (African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States)-EU Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA).

The weeklong event will include consultation meetings, panel discussions and constructive debates on whether information disseminated to the general public is impacting behaviour, influencing decisions and changing attitudes to improve standards of living in the region.

The discussions will focus on building synergies and strengthening understanding of the media, building partnerships, while encouraging open and honest dialogue.

Participants will also determine how they will pursue the issues, challenges and programmes identified during their deliberations and ensure they are implemented at all levels.

Some topics to be covered at the seminar include communicating issues relating to climate change and forestry in the Pacific; youth perspectives and utilising information communication and technology; why the media need to promote agriculture, rural development and the environment in the Pacific; agricultural biodiversity in the Pacific and the role of the media in the policy-making and development process.

The seminar will be held at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi from 10 to 14 May.
