Balibo killings legacy triggers NZ journalists' safety seminar
AUT University's Pacific Media Centre in association with the International Committee of the Red Cross will on May 24 hold a conference titled Reporting Wars: The ongoing challenges.

In October 1975, the Indonesian military was conducting a terror campaign in the border regions of East Timor after the country had declared unilateral independence from Portugal.
Five Australian-based journalists – including a New Zealander – went to East Timor to cover the conflict.
The footage and stories they collated were intended to reveal the military's true agenda for invasion to the rest of the world.
They were killed within days of arriving at the town of Balibo. Several weeks later, a sixth Australian journalist was also killed.
Acts of violence against journalists happen all over the world which poses a question – what is being done to protect our journalists while reporting during war time?
On May 24, AUT University's Pacific Media Centre in association with the International Committee of the Red Cross will be presenting a seminar of "Reporting Wars: The ongoing challenges".
The seminar will focus on the safety of journalists reporting during times of war, a controversial and hotly debated topic within the journalism world.
An influential panel of journalists, presenters and an ICRC legal expert will be debating war reporting and the safety of journalists.
The film Balibo, a feature film about the deaths of the six journalists who were killed in East Timor, will also be screened.
TVs's Mike McRoberts and TVNZ's Cameron Bennett are on the panel that will discuss the protection of journalists and what future steps will be taken to ensure their safety.
Tony Maniaty, a former ABC journalist and consultant for the film Balibo, is guest speaker.
May 24 programme:
4.30 – 6.45pm: The screening of the film Balibo about the killing of six journalists in East Timor.
7.15-9pm: Reporting Wars: the ongoing challenges seminar –
- Featuring war correspondents TVNZ's Cameron Bennett, TV3's Mike McRoberts, independent journalist Jon Stephenson.
Guest speaker is Tony Maniaty, author of Shooting Balibo, and consultant for the film Balibo.
The panel will be chaired by Dr Camille Nakhid of the Pacific Media Centre Advisory Board.
