Pacific Islands Forum dates set
Pacific Scoop:
Report – By Adrian Hatwell.
The 41st Pacific Islands Forum will take place from August 3 to 6 in Port Vila, Vanuatu this year.
The Forum Secretariat has confirmed that August 4 will see the annual event officially open, with forum leaders meeting on August 5.
Secretariat chair Johnson Honimae says the agenda for the meeting will be finalised by the Officials Committee meeting at the Forum Secretariat in Suva, Fiji from 15 – 16 July.
"All members of the Forum with the exception of Fiji, which has been suspended from the forum, are expected to attend the meeting," Honimae says.
Fiji was suspended from the forum on May 2 after military coup leaders failed to meet the forum-imposed deadline for holding a general election.
The Pacific Islands Forum is an organisation bringing together 15 independent states of the Pacific Ocean to cooperatively work towards development of the region.
Leaders of the forum group will meet to discuss matters relating to economic growth, sustainable development, good governance, and security; the "four pillars" of the organisation's Pacific Plan initiative.
Proceeding the forum proper will be meetings for both the Smaller Island States unit (SIS) and Pacific members of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) group of States, on August 3.
Leaders of the SIS will meet to discuss the specific needs of Pacific states with smaller economies and vulnerable environments.
The ACP is a group of countries cooperating with the European Union towards goals of sustainable development and poverty reduction.
Following the forum on August 6 the Post-Forum Dialogue session will see forum group representatives meet with 14 dialogue partners, including China, the US, and the European Union, to discuss decisions at a wider international level.
The Pacific Islands Forum group is comprised of Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.
Non-sovereign regions New Caledonia and French Polynesia participate in the forum as associate members, with seven other territories and organisations invited as forum observers.
Members of the SIS unit include Cook Islands, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau and Tuvalu. The pacific region of the group includes most member states of the Forum, excluding Australia and New Zealand.
