Pacific Island communities still hurting
More action needs to be taken to address the hurt in Pacific Island communities from the continued rise in Pacific unemployment, Labour's Pacific Island Affairs spokesperson Luamanuvao Winnie Laban said today.

"It is simply not good enough that 1 in 7 Pacific Islanders is out of work. I strongly feel that not enough is being done by Pacific Island Affairs Minister Georgina te Heu Heu to tackle what is a major a crisis for Pacific communities," Luamanuvao Winnie Laban said.

"A jobless rate of 14.4 per cent, over eight percentage points higher than the national rate, shows just how much more Pacific communities are hurting than many others.

"I have been meeting with social and community groups, including church leaders, that are dealing with the associated problems unemployment brings and more needs to be done to ensure that Pacific Islanders can get back into jobs or training.

"Today's unemployment numbers are welcome for all New Zealanders, but questions need to be asked as to why Pacific Islanders are not sharing in the recovery.

"The Government can not sit back and continue to do nothing about these appalling figures. Where are the initiatives and programmes to help Pacific people get back into work?

"In fact where is Georgina te Heu Heu? She has said little if anything on Pacific unemployment since she took up her role as Minister.

"Today we found out that 13,300 Pacific Islanders are out of work and Georgina te Heu Heu continues to remain silent. Her silence is deafening.

"Pacific Islanders want to work. They have contributed to this economy and society and want to continue to achieve and share in the recovery.

"Sadly it seems this Government is neglecting them," Luamanuvao Winnie Laban said.
