New appointments to Pacific Development

The Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control, Hon Georgina te Heuheu, has announced the appointment of Peter Kiely, Dr Paul Blaschke, Tagaloatele Dr Peggy Fairbairn-Dunlop, Sandy Gauntlett and Penehuro Lefale as Advisory Trustees to the Pacific Development …New appointments to Pacific Development and Conservation Trust Board

The Minister for Disarmament and Arms Control, Hon Georgina te Heuheu, has announced the appointment of Peter Kiely, Dr Paul Blaschke, Tagaloatele Dr Peggy Fairbairn-Dunlop, Sandy Gauntlett and Penehuro Lefale as Advisory Trustees to the Pacific Development and Conservation Trust Board (the Trust). Mr Kiely has also been appointed as Chair of the Trust.

The New Zealand Government established the Trust by Trust Deed on 23 May 1989. The money for the Trust was received from France in 1986 in recognition of events surrounding the destruction of the vessel Rainbow Warrior.

The Trust funds projects that promote sustainable development in the South Pacific (including New Zealand), while conserving the natural environment and cultural heritage of its peoples. The Trust's net income is made available each year for groups in New Zealand and the South Pacific to use for charitable purposes.

Peter Kiely of Auckland is a Partner with Kiely Thompson Caisley Solicitors. He has had extensive involvement in the Pacific region including as founder and member of the Papua New Guinea New Zealand Business Council, which involved writing the Council's Constitution. He is a member of the Fiji Business Council and has recently been appointed as Director of Air Terminal Services in Tonga.

Dr Paul Blaschke of Wellington is an independent environmental and ecological consultant with over 30 years experience in the environment and conservation sectors. He is also a lecturer at the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences at Victoria University.

Tagaloatele Dr Peggy Fairbairn-Dunlop ONZM of Wellington is the Director/Associate Professor of Vaaomanu Pasifika at Victoria University. She has spent 30 years teaching and researching Pacific development issues, with specialist areas in community development, and gender actvisim, with a focus on women in agriculture in developing nations.

Sandy Gauntlett of Auckland is the Manager of the Micro Grants Facility, for the Global Forest Coalition on Underlying Causes of Deforestation and Forest Degradation. He has over 20 years experience in the environment field with particular interest in climate change, global forestation and the environment.

Penehuro Lefale of Wellington is the Manager for International Cooperation and Development at the Meteorological Service. He has international experience working with government and NGOs, and in funding development programmes in the Pacific region. Mr Lefale was the winner of the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize as a member of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on climate change.

All appointments are for a term of three years, from 8 June 2010 to 7 June 2013.
