"Challenges facing the media in the Pacific Islands"



Pacific journalists encounter unique challenges as they endeavour to gather and report news in the Pacific Island region. These range from direct interference from the State in some instances, to more indirect but no less intrusive cultural pressures in others.



The Centre for Pacific Studies is pleased to host a panel discussion to be chaired by Dr Steven Ratuva on the topic: "Challenges facing the media in the Pacific Islands". The panel will consist of the following young Pacific Island journalists:



· Nerys Case: political journalist with the Cook Islands News.



· Linny Folau: photojournalist with Matangi Tonga Online.



· Sosikeni Ramese (Keni Lesa): Editor Samoa Observer, Sunday Samoan and Weekend Observer, also correspondent for Reuters, AFP and Associated Press.



· Vaimoana Tapalaeo: Qantas junior reporter of the year and a journalist with the New Zealand Herald.
