[pima.nius] Re: [Pacific_media_watch] 6807 FIJI: NZ authors group criticises 'big quiet' on media freedom

I almost choked when I read the following quote:

"I'm surprised that quite a number of groups have not protested in some way. One would normally have expected to hear from the Journalists' Association, for example, in New Zealand."

For society's information, the New Zealand journalists association has not been operational since 1987.

BIG QUIET FROM NZ FOR FIJI'S MEDIA FREEDOM
www.newstalkzb.co.nz/newsdetail1.asp?storyID=174164

AUCKLAND (NewstalkZB/Pacific Media Watch): New Zealand writers are disappointed some of their colleagues in the industry and the government are not standing up for media freedom in Fiji.

A draft decree has been issued by Fiji's interim administration on freedom of the press.

The Society of Authors says the document will mean intolerable pressure on Fiji's media to refrain from criticising the country's government.

President Tony Simpson wonders why there is so little support from various New Zealand organisations.

"I'm surprised that quite a number of groups have not protested in some way. One would normally have expected to hear from the Journalists' Association, for example, in New Zealand."

Simpson says the government's silence is disgraceful.
