MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, May 12, 2010) – The United States says it has begun a campaign to educate its own government agencies about the needs of Pacific Islanders in the country.

The month of May has been declared Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, under an initiative announced by President Barack Obama.

The aim is to highlight the disparities in employment, poverty, health and education experienced by Pacific people and improve the lives of people in those communities.

The initiative's director, Kiran Ahuja, says difficulty accessing information and services is one of the problems and they are encouraging 23 federal agencies to better engage with Pacific leaders.

She says President Obama has seen first hand the struggles in minority communities.

"The President has not only grown up in Hawaii and lived in Indonesia and has had numerous international experiences. So I really think he is committed to supporting a number of communities you know that are under served in this country."
