NZRU boss Steve Tew is seething at Andy Hayden's claim of a race based selection policy at the Crusaders, labeling it an insult

Former All Black Andy Haden is under fire for his claim of a race-based selection policy at the Crusaders.

Hayden dropped a bombshell yesterday with his assertion that the Super 14 franchise has a quota system in place for Polynesian players. He claims the Crusaders limit the number of non-European imports in the squad to three.

The Rugby Almanack shows the 2007 squad had six players of Maori or Pacific Island decent, double the amount of Haden's quota claims.

NZRU boss Steve Tew is absolutely seething at the slur, saying it is a huge insult to everyone at the franchise. However, he says he is not surprised that the as yet baseless remarks have come from Haden.

"He often makes comments that have got no foundation in fact, are inflammatory and made for effect".

Tew is now questioning the appropriateness of Haden as an ambassador for the Rugby World Cup. Haden is one of six ambassadors appointed by the World Cup minister Murray McCully.

But Tew is unsure if someone making such inflammatory comments should be promoting the game.

"I think the six people they've picked to be the ambassadors are a good balanced group but those comments might make one reconsider the appropriateness".

Tew says the NZRU had no say in appointing the ambassadors.
