SUVA (The Fiji Times/Pacific Media Watch): Journalists in media offices in Fiji lack adequate training, reports the The Fiji Tmes.

The remarks by former Fiji Times editor Vijendra Kumar were made as he addressed journalism students of the University of Fiji at a seminar yesterday.

He said journalism norms had changed partly as a result of failures by the media to distinguish information intended for private and public domain.

"The power of the press can be immense, all because there are journalists who can go out and elicit the truth that someone is trying to conceal or deliberately mislead," he said.

He shared his experience of when he first joined the Fiji Times at its Lautoka office in 1969 and was assigned to cover the then Coral Festival that was held in Sigatoka.

"A senior reporter was not deigned to cover this but it was for a young cadet reporter," he said.

He said a free press was one of four pillars of a democracy and that the role of the media was that of a watchdog which scrutinised all government decisions and kept an eye on other arms of society, including the judiciary.

On the digital revolution of the media, Kumar said while it could be a problem and required filtering, it should be welcomed because it would help make the media better.

He said there was no easy answer to exaggeration but stressed the need for more ethical standards and better responsibility by the media.

"Competition in the media is so fierce these days - every newspaper wants a good headline and story and this has been noticed as an emerging problem in Australia. It comes back to training and editorial responsibilities."

If the news editor is able to distinguish and not exaggerate, then they are on good grounds," he said.

Queries were raised on why certain information had often been left out of reports by the media to which Kumar replied that it was difficult to ascertain if the story had been manipulated by the reporter or government censors.
