FIJI REGIME TO START CONSULTATIONS ABOUT MEDIA DECREE
www.rnzi.com/pages/news.php?op=read&id=51507

SUVA (Radio NZ International/Pacific Media Watch): Fiji's interim regime is about to start consulting on a new media decree.

The country's media has been under censorship since the public emergency regulations came into place in April.

The interim Prime Minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, has told Auckland's Radio Tarana the decree will place an emphasis on responsible reporting.

"This is what the media in Fiji have been consciously ignoring. Especially in the past two decades. It has helped them increase their bottom line, but at the same time contributed to the nation's social and political unrest. [The have been] promoting certain political ideologies and philosophies that have only proven to cause disunity and upheaval."

Commodore Bainimarama says the decree will not mean the government will have control of the media, but will focus on professionalism and try to raise the standard of journalism.
