Draft Fiji media bill talks await AG's office action

FIJI MEDIA BILL TALKS AWAIT AG OFFICE
SUVA (Fiji Broadcasting Corporation/Pacific Media Watch): Consultations on Fiji's new media promulgation will begin once the Attorney-General's office has finished drafting the decree.
Ministry of Information Permanent Secretary Lieutenant Colonel Neumi Leweni said this in an interview with FBC News today.
"As of now, we are waiting for the AG's Chambers to complete their work on the media promulgation, and once the AG's Chambers completes their work, then they will inform the Ministry of Information. The Ministry
will then work with them on the consultation process."
Leweni also confirmed that the Fiji Times and Fiji Television will not be part of the media decree consultations.
"Yes, I can confirm that the two media organisations were informed that they will not be part of the consultation and the reason being that government sees that at times they do not work with government, and
that is why they have been left out of the consultation process."
However, Leweni says that the two media organisations can write to the government if they want to discuss the issue.
"However, government has also indicated that if they do want to come on board, they will need to inform us so we can have a discussion with them so they can be included in the consultation process."
