awesome concept - given medium term climate, water and food futures, ancient knowledge may become more valuable than high tech geekery.

"social cohesion" is a new buzz phrase denoting risk of a mass extinction event.

PRESS RELEASE

UNIVERSITY OF THE SOUTH PACIFIC to host major international conference on traditional knowledge and future change

Many challenges face the people of the Pacific Islands in the 21st century.  Solutions are needed that are both effective and acknowledge the cultural context in which they will be applied. With this in mind the University of the South Pacific will host an international conference from the 29th of November to the 3rd of December 2010.

The conference: "Future Challenges, Ancient Solutions" will examine several areas in which there are challenges confronting Pacific people including issues of resource management, food security, sustainable development, cultural transformation, leadership and governance, and see whether solutions were developed in the past in response to comparable challenges. The aim of this conference is to identify those ancient solutions and evaluate their efficacy.  The overarching goal is to inform solutions for contemporary challenges, particularly by enhancing their cultural and environmental sustainability to the Pacific Islands context.

This conference will be an ideal place for USP staff and students as well as other stakeholders in the development field to present their research findings on the conference theme.

Deadline for submission of abstracts for presentation at the conference is the 20th of August 2010 (it is likely to be extended but please act fast if interested).  Registration will close on the 19th of October 2010.  Further information on the conference is available on the conference website www.usp.ac.fj/conference

Sponsorship for registration fees will be available to:

a.       Students of tertiary institutions who are citizens of USP member countries and whose abstracts are accepted for presentation.

b.      USP staff whose abstracts are accepted for presentation.
