TWO people are dead while two are believed to be missing after Cyclone Mick which left destruction in its path when it passed over Fiji on Monday night.

Assistant police spokesman Sergeant Atunaisa Sokomuri said 55-year-old Thyra Brown was pronounced dead on arrival at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital on Monday afternoon after she collapsed near Terry Walk in central Suva.

Sgt Sokomuri said bystanders said the woman was crossing the road from MHCC with a big umbrella when strong winds pushed her off the road where she collapsed.

He said the post-mortem examination was still to be conducted.

Sgt Sokomuri said a Class Eight student died after a mango tree fell on him while he was running to a safe place when Cyclone Mick hit the Western Division on Monday.

The boy was from Drala Village and the incident occurred at Savatu in Nadarivatu at about 11.14pm.

Mr Sokomuri said two men were missing after they tried to cross flooded rivers to get to safety.

He said Jeremaia Nasea, 23, of Nasivikoso Village in Ba was believed to have been swept away by strong currents after he tried to cross the river at about 8.40pm on Monday.

Mr Sokomuri said a 19-year-old was believed to have drowned while trying to cross a river. He said Isimeli Koro was swept away by strong currents at the Lawaki river in Tailevu.

According to police the search and rescue team searched for the victim but could not find him.

Police have appealed to members of the public to refrain from crossing flooded rivers and creeks.

Mr Sokomuri said police had raised awareness on the issue even before the cyclone alert was given but people continued to disregard warnings.
