Asian drug smugglers are using kava from Fiji to smuggle methamphetamine ingredients into New Zealand, police say.

Thousands of cold medicine tablets with ingredients used for the manufacture of methamphetamine are being taken into Nadi from China and South Korea. They are then put into kava packs, which are popular among the Fiji Indian and Pacific communities in Auckland.

Fiji police say many of the people carrying the plastic bags of kava are innocent travellers. One unsuspecting couple travelling to New Zealand were questioned after an X-ray showed a package within a sealed bag of kava. It held five kilograms of pseudoephedrine-based tablets.
