18 August 2010  Media Statement
Opportunity to take action against loan sharks

New Consumer Affairs Minister John Boscawen should make protecting vulnerable consumers from loan sharks one of his first priorities, Labour's Consumer Affairs spokesperson Carol Beaumont said today.

"Recently ACT and National voted against my member' s bill – the Credit Reform (Responsible Lending) Bill - progressing to a Select Committee for full scrutiny and public submissions," Carol Beaumont said.

"This decision was one many people from across the political spectrum considered was wrong given the enormous human cost of high interest rates and irresponsible lending.

"I understand Mr Boscawen has a sympathetic position on the victims of loan sharks and I hope this might translate into some action.

"I urge him to rise to my challenge to move beyond petty politics and reviews and work urgently with Labour to find solutions to this abhorrent exploitation in our communities.

"It is time we all took action and I will seek a meeting with Mr Boscawen at the earliest opportunity."
