Congratulations to Pacific Arts Association
Ian George, Cook Islands visual artist has made huge contribution to Pacific art in NZ his roles as art teacher, Chair of Tautai Trust and member of Creative NZ Pacific Arts Committee and continues his work as Arts Advisor with the Ministry of Education and Co Owner of the Art Studio in Rarotonga. He was a key player with University of the South Pacific Cook Islands in bringing the PAA triennial Symposium to the Cook Islands 9 to 11 August. The PAA connects individuals and institutions around the world encouraging greater cooperation among those involved with the creation, study and exhibition of Pacific Art. This is a first for Oceania though Karen Stevenson brought the first one to our neighbourhood of Christchurch in 2003. Pacific artists funded by CNZ attended for the first time. Since then Shigeyuki Kihara http://www.tautai.org/shigeyuki-kihara/ and others attended the Paris Symposium in 2007.She made an important connection that lead to her work being purchased by MOMA in New York. This was a first not just for the Pacific but also NZ.

Amongst the dozens attending from here is Marilyn Kohlhase Co Director of okaioceanikart who will give a presentation that will address the theme of the event 'Pacific Art in the 21st Century: Museums, New Global communities and Future Trends.

HAERE MAI I OKAI show staffed by Art History students.

You can get a glimpse of the work of artists Dagmar Dyck and Leua Leonard in an article in the NZ Herald supplement last week. http://www.okaioceanikart.com/images/files/Marilyn_Kohlhase.pdf. A discerning Auckland curator commented on the works of Mason Lee – Fiji and Leua Latai Leonard - Samoa. We promote fresh Pacific voices especially from the Island nations themselves. As Neil Ieremaia of renowned dance company Black Grace said at the CNZ Pacific ARTspeak recently, ...' Pacific Art must be judged on its merits...' so it is heartening to get interested feedback on fabulous works by as yet artists unknown to the local arts community. This fits with okai's role is to bring in new Pacific voices.... as well as promote and support those already recognised. HAERE MAI I OKAI is a show that does just that.

The exhibition space at 69 Beach Rd is now staffed by Art History graduates on an irregular basis but starting with 11am to 3pm on Fridays. Come along this Friday and meet third year student, Candace Weir.
