TVNZ changes about repackaging, not journalism
Television New Zealand's unveiling today of changes to news and current affairs is more about repackaging news and less about journalism, says Labour broadcasting spokesperson Brendon Burns.
"Today's announcement, which will see 15 jobs lost and others re-designated, is far more an inevitable outcome of the Government's requirement for TVNZ to solely be a commercially-focused organisation than it is about changes to technology," Brendon Burns said.
"The sad consequence is that we will have more effort devoted by reporters to editing and repackaging their stories than doing the legwork and analysis you would expect from a state-owned television service with a commitment to inspiring New Zealanders.
"Today's announcement comes as no surprise given that the TVNZ Amendment Bill, now before Parliament, does away with the TVNZ Charter and simply requires TVNZ to focus on making as much revenue as possible," Brendon Burns said.
