FIJI REGIME DEFENDS MEDIA DECREE
Answers claim of chill on investment
SUVA, Fiji (Fijilive, June 30, 2010) - Fiji's permanent secretary for Information, Sharon Smith-Johns believes to say the new Media Decree will have an impact on investment in Fiji, is really too 'farfetched' if one has not read the decree carefully.
Smith-Johns stressed there is no relation between investment in Fiji and media decree.
"The decree does not impose on the rights of any investor or the foreign investment legislation," she said.
"In reality, foreign investors are recognized for their capacity to access substantial funds, transfer new technology, draw on diverse skills and use their information and networks to access the ever-changing market opportunities in our globalize economic environment."
Smith-Johns added government recognizes the importance of both local and foreign sources of private investment in Fiji.
"Over the last 5 months more than FJ$400 million [US$202 million] worth of foreign investment projects have been approved by the Government."
"Most of these investment projects have been in tourism, commercial, industrial and agricultural sectors," she said.
Smith-Johns also revealed there are major local and foreign investors who have applied for investment approvals for new projects in Fiji.
"This shows that there is significant growth in investments in these sectors which is a good indicator for the economy."
