How is this for a good laugh? The Fiji Sun suggesting Bainimarama's way is "the Pacific way". Thanks to PacNews for sharing the joke.
Tuilaepa way not the Pacific Way: Fiji Sun Editorial
The decision by Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi not to attend this month's Melanesian Spearhead Group Plus Summit in Natadola clearly shows two things.
First, Tuilaepa is very much toeing the Australian and New Zealand government line against Fiji.
Second, he has no interest in dialogue on Fiji or on seeing the situation here for himself. He can criticise our Prime Minister from a distance but he is not prepared to come here and meet Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama face to face.
Tuilaepa seems to have forgotten what the Pacific Way of life is all about.
It's all about being courageous in trying to resolve issues and also to settle differences.
Not to forget the maintaining of the traditional links between Fiji and Samoa and close ties between our people.
Instead, Tuilaepa is dancing to the tune from the politicians and bureaucrats down south in Canberra and Wellington.
It's another lost opportunity for Tuilaepa to show the Pacific Islands that he can be a leader not a follower. Tuilaepa in fact could learn much about courage and independence in leadership from Commodore Bainimarama.
Media footnote: There's been much noise from Apia this past week about forming a new regional news media body to replace the Suva-based Pacific Islands News Association.
Is it any coincidence that two of the main instigators of this move seem to be an Australian (working in Samoa) and a New Zealander (based in the Cook Islands)?
And that this new body will be based in Apia, which Tuilaepa obviously wants to replace Suva as the hub of the South Pacific?
No prizes for guessing from which two capitals down south the funding for this so-called new "independent" body is likely to come.
It is all looking suspiciously like more Canberra and Wellington influence on the region....PNS (ENDS)
