NZ appeals for Pacific bone marrow donors

Updated September 16, 2010 17:11:19

An appeal has been launched in New Zealand to get Pacific island people to become bone marrow donors.

This follows the death of aspiring Wellington film-maker Kurt Filiga from leukaemia, a death doctors say might have been avoided if a matching donor could have been found in time.

Bone marrow helps produce blood cells, and transfusions of it can help the body's immune system, which can help fight some diseases.

Otago University associate professor of Pathology, Dr John Carter, says Pacific Islanders aren't on the list of possible donors in great numbers, and this leaves them vulnerable if they suffer from certain types of cancer.

Presenter: Bruce Hill
Speaker: Otago University associate professor of Pathology, Dr John Carter
