Alter-Native Surfaces Exhibition opens Sunday 6th and Monday 14th

A warm welcome to join us to celebrate Okai's Exhibition of Alter-Native Surfaces at the opening Ceremony of the 2011 Pasefika Festival on Level 4 in Aotea Centre at 11 am this Sunday.

Sale Pepe 2008 recipient of CNZ's Salamander Gallery Inaugural Emerging Visual Arts Award back from a two year art making break and a honeymoon in France and Spain invited 3 other contemporary Samoan male artists to mount the first ever abstract Samoan artists exhibition that is part of the Auckland Festival of Arts Visual Arts Programme.

He is joined by Sekio Fuapopo (here for 2 weeks from San Francisco), Nestor Opetaia and Nathan Suniula. At Art School before the others were born, Sekio's works reflect his deep connection to nature and Samoan values in ways that will surprise viewers. Come see for yourself and meet the new generation who are equally unusual for their generation of artists of Samoan descent with their canvases.

Alter-Native Surfaces - Monday 14th, 69 Beach Rd. 6 to 8pm.

If you can't make the Aotea Centre show, then you are invited to our okai@Reef opening down on 69 Beach Rd. It's a fabulous space to see the artworks in a new light and catch up with friends and last opportunity to meet Sekio before he returns home.

Parliament's Gallery Space opening of Resilience Exhibition

Attended by a broad range of politicians, Samoan leaders, Pacific arts world movers and shakers, friends and most importantly artists Mikoyan Vekula of Waikanae and Leua Latai Leonard artist and National University of Samoa Visual Arts Coordinator, the evening opened with a prayer for the people of Christchurch. The Hon Georgina Te Heuheu Minister of Pacific Island Affairs spoke proudly of the talents of the creatives of the Pacific world who had overcome adversity to make take their place alongside other achievers in sports, the professions and politics in NZ. Fittingly Samoan children came with their parents to see the paintings of school pupils from the Samoa Tsunami ART Therapy Project curated by Leua and Florence Faumuina-Aino.
