Pohiva threatens to quit Tongan cabinet

Updated January 13, 2011 17:08:34

The makeup of Tonga's new government is uncertain, as Democratic Party leader Akilisi Pohiva is threatening to resign from cabinet.

His party won 11 of the 17 seats elected by the people in November's election, but it was outmanoeuvred by a coalition of Noble and independent MPs.

The new prime minister, Lord Tuivakano, made Mr Pohiva and his deputy, MP Isileli Pulu, cabinet ministers, despite the Democratic Party demanding much more than just two seats.

Now the Democratic Party leader is threatening to walk away entirely, although he's not saying why.

Presenter: Bruce Hill
Speaker: Tonga correspondent Monalisa Palu
