Pacific demo against NZ health cuts
Updated
Around 200 Pacific Island protesters demonstrated at New Zealand's Parliament earlier today, calling for the Government to reverse its cuts to funding for health services.
The demonstration included health care providers and church leaders, who said they are concerned about the effects of the cuts on the well-being of communities in the largely Pacific Islands area of Porrirua, just north of Wellington.
The opposition Labour Party's spokesperson for Pacific Island Affairs, Su'a William Sio, has criticised the Minister of Pacific island Affairs, National Party MP Georgina Te Heuheu, for calling the event a celebration of pacific services, calling her remark condescending.
