. . .
Like many definitions taken from a dictionary, these ones on racism isn't quite accurate. I believe many people use the term 'racist' to mean those ideas that exclude people based on race. This comes from the idea that race is somehow linked with certain characteristics.Let's forget Harawira and think about the real issue here. Who has the right to define New Zealandness?Certainly not a journalist. Was he being racist? Yes, he was excluding a person based on his 'race' (this term itself is ambiguous as it could be a mixture of colour and ethnicity).Should we be saying he doesn't have the right to define NZness based on his own identity? No because as Albert Wendt says, no-one is the guardian of culture. My own opinion is that New Zealand is a land of migrants, and to think that New Zealand has a national 'look' is extremely puzzling. I thought we are a fairly heterogenous group. To think the New Zealand has a 'look' would be a very scary nation indeed !

When 57% of TV3's Campbell Live on screen poll texted to say TVNZ's Breakfast host Paul Henry's remarks about NZ's Governor General Sir Anand Satyanand was NOT racist , this even surprised host John Campbell
Although such polls are not scientifically sound it however shows that people
In New Zealand perhaps do not understand what the term racism means. According to the NZ pocket Oxford dictionary racism is " the belief that human abilities are determined by race". This means if Mr. Henry's comments on Sir Anand not being a New Zealander because he doesn't sound New Zealander shows' Mr.Henry bases his opinion on his own race being the one that determines who is and who is not a New Zealander?
THIS IS BEING RACIST IS IT NOT????
According to the Palangi Oxford dictionary definition… it is. This dictionary goes on to describe racialism as the "belief in superiority of a particular race, antagonising between different races…"
Many have tried to describe Maori MP Hone Harawira's recent objections about his children dating pakehas as racist too. Some saying it is the same as what Paul Henry is saying.
But hang on Hone is not saying his Maori race is superior to pakehas unlike Mr.Henry's ".speaking like a New Zealander" comment . That's it .Its when one race makes antagonising remarks based on there believe they (their race) are superior!... that is what racism is…
Hone Harawira may be guilty of being discriminatory whereas Paul Henry is out and out determining what a New Zealander should look and sound like based on his race.
Sir Anand a NZ born Indo-Fijian whose parents are FBIs (Fijian Born Indians) actually represents what NZ is becoming, a more multi-ethnic population. But is NZ a multi-cultural country…? Certainly Messrs.Henry and Harawira's controversial comments shows that perhaps NZ is not yet multiculturalists' as the 2 main races Pakeha and Maori are still needing some work.
In 2002 Dame Joan Metge presented a discussion paper at the Waitangi Rua Rautau conference on ROPEWORKS –He Taura Whiri. 'Taura' means a rope and
'Whiri' "to plait' It seems NZ has still got a lot of Ropeworks to do especially between the 2 main strands …Maori and Palangi.
On a positive strand. Thank you Paul and Hone at least we are talking about it!
